PROGRAM:
Commuter Club
The Commuter Club program was originally developed by the PVTMA
in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Area TMA in 1996. It is an incentive-based
program where applicants pledge to use alternative transportation
(walking, bicycling, carpooling, vanpooling, bus transit, or telecommuting)
at least one day a week. In return for their pledge, Commuter Club
members are directly rewarded and receive a free mug with the program
logo as a reminder of their commitment, and a chance to win a prize
of dinner for two in a monthly drawing.
The TMAs received funding from the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution
Control District for four years. Since Air District funding expired
in 2001, the program has not been promoted as actively by our agency.
As part of our workplan, we have revived the program and are targetting
Pajaro Valley employers and employees through business outreach
and community events.
We believe this program to be an effective way to reduce traffic
congestion on our local roadways, as each pledge made by a program
member represents the reduction of one single occupant vehicle per
week.
PROGRAM ACTIVITIES
Commuter Club GOALS:
1) Help to reduce traffic congestion on our local roadways;
2) Attract single occupancy vehicle commuters to try alternative
modes of transportation through information and incentives;
3) Involve local businesses in the promotion of this program by
making them aware of the benefits to employers and employees of
reducing single occupancy vehicle (SOV) trips made to work-sites.
